Buddy for the syllabus

Send me the syllabus. I’ll pull out every due date and exam and put them on your calendar once it’s connected.

A lineman in Casper, Wyoming, starting a night accounting class at 41, an hour before his shift.

Send me the syllabus and connect your calendar once. I’ll add the dates, and remind you before each one if you ask.

  • Split the reading into a weekly plan so I finish the textbook before the final.
  • Text me the night before anything’s due this semester.
  • Which week of this class looks the heaviest?
How connecting your calendar works
  1. Today 6:08 AM
  2. You sent a file: ACCT 1010 syllabus.pdfPDF
  3. You: here’s the syllabus for my accounting class. first one in 20 years. can you put every due date on my calendar
  4. Buddy: Welcome back. I found 16 dates: 12 homework sets, 3 quizzes, and the final on December 11. Your calendar isn’t connected yet. Want the link?
  5. You: yeah
  6. 6:14 AM
  7. You: ok done
  8. Buddy: All 16 are on your calendar now, each one labeled Accounting 1010. Want a text the night before each one?
  9. You: yes. and remind me the final covers everything lol Buddy laughed at this.
  10. Buddy: Done. Texts at 8 the night before, and the one before the final will say it covers the whole semester.

Send me the syllabus. I’ll pull out every due date and exam and put them on your calendar once it’s connected.

From a syllabus to your calendar

  1. Send me the syllabus

A PDF, a Word file, or a photo of the printout. If the class has a separate schedule page, send that too.

  2. Connect your calendar once

Adding events needs a connected calendar. I’ll send a setup link, you finish the sign-in yourself, and then I can add the dates.

  3. Pick your reminders

Ask for a text the night before each due date, or a weekly look at what’s coming. Tell me when to stop, like the day of the final.

More you can ask for

  • Here’s the syllabus. Put every due date on my calendar.
  • Text me every Sunday night with what’s due this week.
  • Make a one-page list of every due date I can tape inside my binder.
  • The professor moved Quiz 2 to the 24th. Fix my calendar.
  • I’m taking two classes now. Which weeks do their due dates pile up?
  • Make a spreadsheet of every assignment with its due date and points.

What you get back

  • Dates on your calendar

Each due date and exam as an event on your connected calendar. What I can do there depends on that connection.

    Connected apps
  • Reminders before they’re due

Texts at the time you pick, until the day you say to stop. Ask what’s scheduled or change it whenever you want.

    Reminders and repeating work
  • A list you can print

A PDF or a spreadsheet of every date, for the fridge or the front of a binder.

Questions people ask

Does Buddy need my calendar for this?

To add events, yes. He needs a supported connected calendar, and you finish the sign-in yourself through the link he sends. Without one he can still make a list, a file, or reminders by text. Telling Buddy a date is not the same as putting it on your calendar.

Will he see everything else on my calendar?

Once it’s connected he can read it, and he only changes it when you ask, like adding these due dates. You can disconnect it from Connected apps whenever you want.

Can he get the syllabus from my school’s website?

Sometimes. Buddy can work through websites and download material. If the site needs a sign-in, he sends a link to take over his screen so you sign in on the site yourself. Never send a password in chat. Some sites refuse access, so sending the PDF is often quicker.

What if a date changes?

Tell Buddy the new date. With the calendar connected he can change the event, and you can ask him to move the reminder too.

How do I stop the reminders when the class ends?

Say when they should stop when you set them up, or ask Buddy to remove the rest later. The VXBE desktop app also lists them under Settings, then Scheduled work.

The syllabus goes in the binder. The dates go on the calendar.
