Buddy for rain logs

Text me what’s in the gauge. I’ll log it in your sheet, tell you what it adds up to, and pull the season together when someone asks for it.

Two rain gauges two miles apart south of Hays, Kansas, after a June storm.

Text me the reading and which gauge. I’ll log it, tell you where the month stands, and make a copy when you need one.

  • Log 0.3 at the house. Nothing at the south quarter.
  • Which month has been wettest this year?
  • Email me the season so far as a spreadsheet.
How connecting your sheet works
  1. Today 6:40 PM
  2. You: log today’s rain: 0.6 at the house, 1.1 at the south quarter
  3. Buddy: Logged both in your rain sheet ✅ June’s at 3.4 inches at the south quarter and 2.1 at the house.
  4. You: that’s a big difference for 2 miles
  5. Buddy: It is. The south gauge caught more in four of the last five rains.
  6. You: landlord wants the season so far, by month. can you send it
  7. Buddy: Here’s April through June, both gauges, as a spreadsheet. I emailed you a copy too, so you can forward it.
  8. You: perfect. he’ll love that Buddy loved this.

From the gauge to the totals

  1. Connect your sheet once

If your log lives in Google Sheets, connect that account and I’ll add each reading there. Without one, ask and I’ll make you an Excel spreadsheet to start from.

  2. Text the reading

The inches, and which gauge if you keep more than one. I log it and tell you where the month stands.

  3. Ask what it adds up to

A month, a season, one gauge against another. Ask for a spreadsheet or a chart when someone else needs to see it.

More you can ask for

  • Log today’s rain: 0.6 inches.
  • Log 1.1 at the south quarter and 0.6 at the house.
  • How does this June compare to last June?
  • Every Sunday night, text me the week’s rain total.
  • Make me a chart of rain by month for this year.
  • Email me the season so far as a spreadsheet for my landlord.

What you get back

  • Each reading in your sheet

The date, the gauge, and the inches, added to the Google Sheet you connected, with the running total in my reply.

    How connected apps work
  • Answers from your own numbers

Totals by month or season, one gauge against another, this year against last, in plain words.

    Working with data
  • A copy you can hand someone

An Excel spreadsheet or a PDF, emailed to your own address so you can forward it.

    Work with files
  • A chart when you want one

Rain by month as an image you can text, print, or tape up in the shop.

Questions people ask

Do I need a spreadsheet already?

No. If you keep one in Google Sheets, connecting it lets Buddy add to it. If you don’t, he can make an Excel spreadsheet from the readings you send and give you a new copy when you ask.

Can I text him a reading from the field?

Yes. Text the inches and which gauge, and he adds the row to your rain sheet.

Can he send it straight to my landlord?

Buddy can email a copy to your own address to forward. To send it to your landlord directly, connect an email account and tell him the address.

Can he tell me when rain is coming?

Yes. Ask him to check the forecast on a schedule, like every evening during harvest, and text you when rain shows up in it. A check on a schedule isn’t a storm warning.

Can he remind me to check the gauge?

Yes. Ask for a reminder at a set time, like every morning at 7, and say when it should stop.

Read the gauge. Text the number. That’s the whole log.
