Buddy for packing lists
Tell me where you’re going, for how long, and who’s coming. I’ll check the weather and send a packing list you can check off.
A dad in Hilo, Hawaii, packing two kids for their first snow at Grandma’s in Fairbanks.
The checklist page in this conversation is the one Buddy made from these texts.
Send me the place, the dates, and who’s packing. I’ll build the list around the weather and what you’ll be doing.
- Make a packing list for a week in Maine in October.
- Make a camping checklist for our group that everyone can open on their phone.
- Here’s last year’s list. Update it for a beach week with a baby.
- You: we leave for my mom’s in fairbanks on the 18th. can you make a packing list for me and the kids? they’re 8 and 11 and have never seen snow
- Buddy: Oh, fun! How many nights, and will you be outside a lot?
- You: a week. they want to sled every day
- Buddy: Then they’ll need real layers. Looking at Fairbanks now.
- 7:14 AM
- Buddy: Here’s a list for all three of you, by person. The kids can each check off their own.
- Fairbanks, the 18th to the 25thChecklist page
- Buddy: The 18th is past the forecast, so I packed for a normal December there, often well below zero. Want me to check the real forecast the night before you fly?
- You: yes please Buddy loved this.
- Buddy: Done. You’ll hear from me on the 17th 🧤

From one text to a packed bag
Tell me the trip
Where, how long, who’s coming, and what you’ll do there. A ski week, a wedding, and a work trip all pack differently.
I check the weather
I look up the forecast for the place. If the trip is past the forecast, I pack for what’s normal there and can check again closer to the day.
Check it off
Get it as a page each person checks off on their own phone, or as a file you can print. Ask for changes any time.
More you can ask for
- Make a packing list for a week in Fairbanks in December, for me and the kids.
- Here’s a photo of what’s on the bed. What am I missing for Iceland?
- I always forget my reading glasses. Put them at the top of every list you make me.
- Pack me for three days of work in Phoenix with one carry-on.
- Make it a PDF I can print and tape inside the closet door.
- The night before we fly, text me the forecast for Fairbanks.

Questions people ask
Can the whole family check off one list together?
Each person checks off their own list on their own phone, and the ticks don’t carry over to anyone else’s. If you want one list for everyone, print a copy.
Who can see the checklist?
Anyone you send the link to. A published page is public, so leave out anything private, like your home address.
How long does the link last?
72 hours. Ask Buddy to keep it live and it stays up for as long as you’re a member, up to ten at a time. He can bring back an expired one too, though he may need the original file.
What if the trip is weeks away?
Buddy can check current weather and the available daily forecast. For a trip further out, he can pack for what’s normal there, and you can ask him to check the forecast again closer to the date.
Will he remember what I always forget?
If you tell him, like the charger you leave behind every time, he can keep it in mind for next time. If it matters, mention it when you ask. A short reminder is enough.
