Buddy for farm weather

Tell me where you farm and what time you’re up. I’ll text you the low, the wind, and the chance of rain every morning, with anything you asked me to watch for up top.

A cattle and corn place outside Broken Bow, Nebraska, and a sprayer that only goes out when the wind lies down.

Tell me the place, the time, and what you need to know. I’ll send it every morning until you tell me to stop.

  • Text me any evening a frost is in the forecast.
  • What’s the wind doing Thursday out at the Ansley place?
  • Pause the morning weather until April.
How Buddy checks the weather
  1. Yesterday 8:40 PM
  2. You: can you text me every morning at 5 with the low, the wind, and whether it’ll rain? we’re outside broken bow
  3. Buddy: Yes. Starting tomorrow at 5. Anything you want me to watch for?
  4. You: put it first if gusts are over 30. can’t spray in that
  5. Buddy: Got it. Gusts over 30 go at the top.
  6. Today 5:00 AM
  7. Buddy: Morning. Gusts go over 30 tomorrow, so no spraying then. They pass 30 around 2 PM and get near 39 overnight.
  8. Buddy: Today: low 37, high 57. Gusts stay under 30, about 21 at most this afternoon. Rain is 5 to 15% this morning and climbs to about 45% by evening, so this morning is your cleanest window.
  9. Buddy: Tomorrow: low 41, high 55, and rain 85 to 96% most of the day, with a thunderstorm in the forecast.
  10. You: spraying this morning then Buddy liked this.

One text, then every morning

  1. Tell me where and when

The town or the ground you mean, the time you want it, and what to include. If a town name could mean two places, say which.

  2. Tell me what to watch for

Gusts over 30, a low under freezing, a good chance of rain. Whatever changes your day goes at the top.

  3. Change it by text

Move it to 4:30, add a second place, or pause it for the winter. Ask in the same conversation and I’ll change it.

More you can ask for

  • Every morning at 5, text me the low, the wind, and whether it’ll rain.
  • Add the rented ground east of Merna to the morning text.
  • I’m hauling calves to Kearney Friday. What’s the weather down there?
  • Give me the rest of the week in one text: highs, lows, and rain chances.
  • Are there any weather alerts out for Custer County right now?
  • Through calving, put any night under 20 at the top of the morning text.

What you get back

  • One text, every morning

The low and high, the wind and gusts, and the chance of rain for the place you named, at the time you picked.

    Plans, dates, and weather
  • Your lines first

Whatever you asked me to watch for, like gusts over 30 or a frost, leads the text when the forecast shows it.

  • Alerts when you ask

Ask whether any weather alerts are out for your area, and I’ll check where that coverage exists.

  • Easy to change or stop

Ask what’s scheduled, move the time, pause it for the season, or stop it.

Questions people ask

Is this a storm warning system?

No. Buddy checks at the times you set, so he won’t see a warning the moment it goes out. Keep your weather radio and your phone’s emergency alerts on.

Does my computer need to be on?

No. Scheduled work runs online, so the text goes out at 5 whether or not the VXBE desktop app is open.

Can he cover more than one place?

Yes. Name each place, like the home place and the rented ground east of town. If a name could mean more than one town, tell him which.

How do I change the time or stop it?

Text Buddy in the conversation where you set it up. He can move it, pause it, resume it, or stop it. In the VXBE desktop app, Settings, then Scheduled work, shows it too.

Will he tell me when to spray or cut hay?

No. Buddy reads you the forecast and flags what you asked him to watch for. The call is yours.
