Buddy for the family calendar

Ask me for the family’s week on the night you pick. I’ll read the shared calendar, point out what overlaps, and add what you tell me to.

A dad in Ames, Iowa, after the kids are in bed, with a week that doesn’t quite fit.

Ask me for the week every Sunday. I’ll read your connected calendar, catch the nights that collide, and add what you decide.

  • Does anything overlap next week?
  • Add Jonah’s dentist to the family calendar on the 14th at 3:40.
  • Here’s the school calendar. Put the days off on ours.
How connecting a calendar works
  1. Sunday 8:00 PM
  2. Buddy: Evening! Here’s the week on the family calendar.
  3. Buddy: Mon: Ella’s dentist at 3:40. Tue: Jonah’s band concert at 7. Fri: no school.
  4. Buddy: Thursday’s the tight one. Ella’s soccer and Jonah’s swim both start at 5:30, across town from each other.
  5. You: kevin can do swim. can you put that on there so he sees it
  6. Buddy: Added “Kevin: swim pickup” to Thursday at 5:15. It’s on the shared calendar now.
  7. You: lifesaver. what about saturday
  8. Buddy: Ella’s game at 10, then nothing. A whole free afternoon 🍂
  9. You: don’t tell the kids Buddy laughed at this.

From a shared calendar to a Sunday text

  1. Connect the calendar you share

Ask me and I’ll send a setup link. You sign in yourself and choose the account, and I work from that calendar.

  2. Pick the night and the time

Sunday at 8, Monday at 6, whatever fits your house. I’ll send the week then until you tell me to stop.

  3. Reply to change it

Tell me who’s taking what and I’ll add it to the calendar. What I can change depends on the connection.

More you can ask for

  • Every Sunday night, text me what’s on the family calendar this week.
  • Every Sunday, email Kevin the same rundown from my Gmail.
  • Which Saturdays in November are still open for a trip to Grandma’s?
  • Make a one-page PDF of this month’s calendar to hang on the fridge.
  • Find a night next week with nothing on the family calendar.
  • Remind me Thursday at 5 that Kevin has swim pickup.

What you get back

  • The week in one text

What’s on the family calendar for the coming week, day by day, at the time you picked.

    Reminders and ongoing work
  • The collisions, pointed out

Two practices at once, a concert on a work night. I tell you what overlaps so you can decide who covers it.

  • Events added when you say so

Tell me what to add and I’ll put it on the connected calendar. I don’t add things just because you mentioned them.

    Questions people ask

Which calendars does this work with?

A calendar Buddy can reach through a supported connected app, such as Google Calendar or Outlook. The Connected apps page in your account shows what’s available to you.

Will he change the calendar without asking?

No. Connecting a calendar gives Buddy access to it, not a standing order to change it. He adds or changes events when you ask, and something he remembers doesn’t count as your go-ahead.

Can my partner get the Sunday text too?

The text comes to you. If you want it emailed to someone else, Buddy needs a connected email account and the address you want him to use.

    Who sees what Buddy adds?

Anyone who shares that calendar, the same as if you’d added it yourself.

How do I move or stop the Sunday text?

Ask Buddy in the conversation where you set it up. He can change the day or time, pause it, or remove it. The VXBE desktop app lists it under Settings, then Scheduled work.

Sunday night, the whole week in one text.
