Buddy for budget spreadsheets
Send me last month’s statements or exports. I’ll sort every charge into a category and send back a spreadsheet you can keep using.
A teacher in Greenville, South Carolina, eating lunch at her desk with two bank exports.
The spreadsheet in this conversation is the one Buddy made from these exports.
Send me a month of statements. I’ll sort it, total it, and hand you a spreadsheet you can keep using.
- How much did we spend at Amazon this year? Here are the exports.
- Here are our expenses from the last three months. Which categories changed the most?
- Add October to the spending spreadsheet as its own sheet.
- You sent a file: September exports.csv2 files, checking and credit card
- You: here’s september from checking and our credit card. can you make me a spreadsheet of what we spent by category?
- Buddy: Yes! One thing first: does the card get paid from checking?
- You: yeah on the 5th
- Buddy: Then I’ll leave that payment out so nothing counts twice.
- 12:29 PM
- Buddy: September was $4,286 across both. After the mortgage, the biggest were groceries at $812, dining out and coffee at $395, shopping at $312, and gas at $268.

- You: can we do this every month?
- Buddy: Yes. Send me the exports when the month closes and I’ll add a new sheet. Want a reminder on the 2nd?
- You: yes please Buddy loved this.

From bank exports to a budget
Send me the month
A CSV export or PDF statement from each account. Tell me about money that moves between them, like a card paid from checking.
I sort and total it
Every charge goes into a category, with a total for each. Give me your categories if you have them, or I’ll use plain ones you can rename.
Keep it going
Send next month’s exports and I’ll add them. Ask for a reminder and I’ll text you when it’s time.
More you can ask for
- Make me a spreadsheet of last month’s spending by category.
- Make a pie chart of September as an image I can save on my phone.
- Move Target from shopping to groceries, and redo the totals.
- Make a spreadsheet I can use to plan next month, based on what we actually spent.
- Remind me on the 2nd of every month to send you the exports.
- Turn September into a one-page PDF I can show my husband.
What you get back
A real spreadsheet
An Excel file with one sheet by category and one with every charge, so you can sort it and check my sorting.

Questions people ask
Does Buddy connect to my bank?
He works from the statements and exports you send. Download each month as a CSV or PDF from your bank’s site and attach it.
What if he puts something in the wrong category?
Tell Buddy which charge and where it belongs. He fixes it and redoes the totals, and you can ask him to sort it that way from now on.
Is he giving financial advice?
No. Buddy isn’t a financial advisor. He sorts, totals, and compares what you spent. A plan for next month is built from your own numbers, and the choices are yours.
Can I edit the spreadsheet myself?
Yes. It’s a regular Excel file. Download it, change what you like, and send it back when you want him to work from your version.
