Buddy can keep useful context from your conversations and the work you do together. That can include your preferences, the people and projects in your life, important dates, and things you've corrected. You don't have to say "remember this" every time for him to learn something useful.
I don't have a car, so when we're planning things, walking distance matters to me.
That detail can help next time you plan a trip or choose somewhere to meet. Memory belongs to your relationship with Buddy, so relevant context can help across chats in iMessage, email, and the VXBE desktop app.
What he carries with him
Your basic details can include what you like to be called, your language and time zone, accessibility needs, and how you prefer to communicate. You can also give him standing instructions for how you'd like him to help, such as keeping explanations short or putting the recommendation first.
Alongside those details, Buddy can develop an understanding of an ongoing project, remember what mattered in a past conversation, or keep track of something unresolved. He brings in the context that seems relevant to what you're asking now. That isn't perfect recall of everything you've ever said, and a missing detail in one answer doesn't necessarily mean it was never saved.
He can also remember names you give to exact details. For example, if you tell him "Use this email address when I say the book club," he can save that meaning for later requests. If a name could mean more than one thing, he should ask rather than guess.
For reusable ways of doing work, such as how you like a weekly report arranged, see teaching Buddy a Skill. Remembered dates are covered in plans, dates, and weather.
See what he remembers
Ask Buddy what he remembers about a subject, or ask for a broader picture of what he knows about you. If you want an exact earlier exchange, say that. A remembered understanding and the words in a past conversation are different things.
You might ask:
- "What do you remember about the move?"
- "What do you know about how I like to work?"
- "Why do you think that? What did I tell you before?"
You can also open Settings, then What Buddy remembers, in the VXBE desktop app. The memory view shows saved understandings and information about what shaped them. Where Reword is available, you can correct the wording. Forget lets you remove an entry.
For your basic details and standing instructions, open Settings, then How Buddy knows you. This is also where you can choose what Buddy goes by. Those settings apply across your conversations.
Correct or forget something
Tell Buddy which detail is wrong and what has changed. You can also ask him to forget a specific memory. If several things could match, he may need to clarify which one you mean.
The memory view also has Names you gave me, where you can remove a saved name. Removing it stops Buddy from filling in that saved detail when you use the name later.
Forgetting information from memory is different from deleting a conversation, a saved file, or your whole account. Some memories draw on the same source; forgetting that source can affect related memories too. Your information explains the broader account controls.
Memory and permission
A remembered preference can help Buddy understand a request. It doesn't give him permission to send a message, buy something, or share information on its own. Your current request and its limits still matter.
If a detail is important to what you're asking now, include it rather than relying on him to recall it. A brief reminder is enough; you don't need to rebuild the whole history.
