Buddy’s own computer

Files, software, and a desktop he can use to get the work done.

Buddy has his own computer for work that needs files, software, or a browser. He can run programs, work through graphical applications, and bring several steps together into a useful result. Just ask for what you need; he handles the setup and chooses how to approach it.

His computer is where he does the work. The VXBE desktop app is one place you can talk with him and see what he's doing. You can also ask from iMessage or email without leaving your own computer on.

Give him something to work on

Share the relevant files or tell Buddy where to find the information. You might ask:

  • "Combine these monthly spreadsheets, find duplicate entries, and give me one cleaned-up file."
  • "Put these documents into one PDF, with the application first and the supporting material afterward."
  • "Build a small interactive prototype of this idea and check that its buttons work."
  • "Open the application on your desktop so I can show you which option I mean."

Buddy can work with files, use software, write and run code, and operate an application's menus, buttons, and text fields. You don't need to choose the program or explain each step. If a particular format or application matters, say so.

Some applications aren't available or compatible with his computer. Tell him the result you need so he can look for another way to produce it. If the work depends on a particular app or sign-in, he may need your help with that part.

Watch or take over his desktop

You can ask to watch Buddy work on his desktop or ask to take over for a step yourself. For example: "Let me take over so I can choose the right option."

Watching is for observing while Buddy continues. During a takeover, you can interact with his desktop, and he waits for you to finish before continuing that work.

In the VXBE desktop app, the conversation shows Watch Buddy or Take over when a view is available. Open that control to see his screen. After a takeover, return to the conversation and choose Done or Cancel.

If you're talking through iMessage or email, Buddy can send a takeover link. Open it in your browser and choose Open Buddy's screen. When you're finished, choose I'm done or Cancel on the page. An email handoff can also be finished by replying "done" or "cancel" to Buddy's email. You don't need the VXBE desktop app for those takeover links. For watching without taking control, use the live view offered in the VXBE desktop app.

Not every piece of work has a screen to watch. Buddy may process files or run a program without opening a graphical application. If you want to see something specific, just ask him.

For website sign-ins and other browser steps, see working on the web.

Keep the result

Buddy should save the finished work and send it back in the conversation. Open the resulting file or attachment and download a copy when you want to keep it. You can ask for changes after reviewing it.

A file sitting on his working desktop isn't the same as a saved result. His working computer can close when the work ends, so don't rely on open windows or temporary files being there next time. Tell him which outputs you want to keep.

If Buddy says he made something but it hasn't arrived, ask him to locate and send the result before starting again. Working with files explains how to share material, find saved work, and ask for revisions.
